playing out this month - may calendar

I had a chance to see Jim Page, an old-school folk singer-songwriter activist from Seattle in Berea Sunday May 6th. Jim played and sang for several hours completely unamplified with no PA, no microphones, no nuthin' between him and his audience.

Jim and his D-35 filled that room with a persona and a musical "presence" that was a true force of nature. I think this is the way an act develops after years and years of busking and festivals. There was an immediacy and low-key urgency to his performance that felt like a wind blowing through that room, blowing papers off desktops and pictures off walls.

When Jim floats through your area you owe it to yourself to see a longtime pro combine severe chops and great tunes with a casual and personable presentation.

I also had the great good fortune to see Peter Mayer at Uncle Waldo's Coffe House in Rocky River, Ohio. Peter plays a very percussive style of fingerstyle accompaniment in the service of some wonderful, quirky and beautiful songs.

Uncle Waldo's is becoming a top shelf folk venue. I have yet to see a bad show at Uncle Waldo's, and if you live in the area you owe it to yourself to contact Brian Schmuck and get on his mailing list.

Six Steps Down - The Bookstore on West 25th

I've played the Six Steps Down Bookstore / Bookstore on West 25th Street bookstore now for almost 3 years about once every 6 weeks or so. Six Steps Down is the original hippy/trippy used bookstore and one of the best folk/acoustic gigs in Cleveland as far as I'm concerned.

Mike O'Bryan, the owner, hosts folk, jazz or spoken word performances every Saturday afternoon. I am greatly flattered that Mike has asked me to help book and promote the performing artists.

I am building the Words and Music site now and hope to have a complete performance schedule published by the end of this month. Stay tuned!!

If you are a Cleveland area musician or are passing through Cleveland and would like to play the Six Steps Down please drop me an email at gary.l.nelson@hotmail.com or a blog comment here. If you email me please use "Six Steps Down Performance" in the subject header.

Fairport Convention, the Brit folk-rock band will be presenting an "acoustic" show at the Winchester in Lakewood Ohio Friday, May 18th. Ay, mate - be there or be square!

Last but not least Ramblin' Jack Elliott will be at the Beachland Ballroom July 6th. Ramblin' Jack is a giant and a true national treasure. I hope I will see you there!

I'm going to be at Mocha Dreams Cafe, 20672 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River Ohio Sunday evening May 27th. Come hungry and enjoy a great cup o' Joe or some desert with your beloved!

...and don't forget to send a birthday card to Bob Dylan Thursday, May 24th. Happy birthday, Bob!
