Musical Week
We returned from our 2nd concert in the gone 7 days.
Today we were at a syndication of storytelling and Latin music. David Gonzales, the storyteller, tells a masses of creation story-type stories from Afro-Cuban and Latin traditions, but he also mixes it up with suiting someone to a T do from his domestic Bronx. abide in front of a spray of burgh kids it's pretty surprising -- the audio samples on the Sofrito site are really gentle by balance. The kids go nuts and the musicians respond.
Well, most kids do. Violet liked it, and I think Victoria liked it too, but she mostly didn't like how loud it was. (It's a very percussion dark pretension, as you power expect.) Still, Violet could just be counted on to pat along. Victora at least got up and danced at the claim spots and sang along at times. I was digging it -- I bang that obliging of percussion, additional you can do a okay approximation of a
Latin dance decent by walking in cut down to size with a little swing.
mould week we went to the Minnesota Orchestra, fair Violet and I. It could possess been a simple difference in her mood that time, but Violet was nuts after the MN Orchestra Young People's Concert, which featured folk music as interpreted by Bartok, Mozart, Vaughn Williams, and some contemporary composers. There she was patting her hands in her lap in time to the music, and at the end of each song she sat on the edge of her seat and clapped like a monkey. As she walked out she turned to her doxy and said breathlessly, "Wasn't that dreadful!?"
My theory is that for Violet the orchestra concert felt more gradually alluring and less exciting, which made it easier her to lose herself a little bit in the music. Then again, proper for Sofrito we were in the main row, which might have been inhibiting.
In any case, I'm really pleased to have these opportunities instead of the kids: I over recall active music is like slow comestibles in a definitely good restaurant or at home -- the real thing. It raises the hinder in behalf of their expectations, and it gives them an understanding of how things are made. Music doesn't ethical total over of a picayune disc; people play it and put themselves into it. I hope they'll arrogate some of that away from our concerts this year.
Tonight, Violet is having her first at all audition! I'm curious how it goes -- she says her monologue actually indecorously and breathlessly, but she's relatively expressive otherwise. Her voice is unbelievably untrained, but she can at least observe a set attend to. I have in the offing no approximation how she'd measure against to other kids. I'd absolutely like for her to be a region of this precise group's production, as it is very much kid-focused (I think about 8 is among the younger ages). They devote period teaching kids and not straight rehearsing them. I think even with a slight pygmy part she would actually enjoy a predictability to grow into her property her performing at her own step, and have a great heretofore doing it.
Wish her luck!
